Unfortunately....most will never know how great the surf used to be. Back in the 80's and 90's there were little "dogbone" jetties that lined up with the power poles on land. There were many great spots like the pilings at the place were the road turns away from the beach heading towards South Seas plantation. Broke like a perfect right point on cold front swells. When the front would pass and the wind switched offshore...that spot could be head high to overhead on sets that reeled for well over a 150 yards...while the south jetty in Venice would be waist high and mushy....and crowded on the same swell ! Then heading towards blind pass there was a spot called the "Nut Hut" ....only a few locals ever knew about and surfed that spot. There was a grass shack in someones backyard ...and the let us park in an empty lot they owned nextdoor. Not visible from the beach and the only place around where the water went from 12' deep to 2-3 feet deep in a short fashion. Absolutely board and bone breaking barrels that were dangerous at low tide and epic on an incoming tide with a NW swell and NE winds. Nobody ever surfed Blind pass or south of there becuase of how good north of blind pass got. This may come as a surprise....Captiva was also heavily localised back then. And the 10-15 guys who surfed there wouldn't let anyone catch a wave at all.

So hurricane can demolish properties in spot just like a tornado is that correct? Where is I was thinking a hurricane if it came towards you, everyone around you would be in danger too.

The end that was demolishing you said they’re gonna put something else there, did the people have insurance like flood insurance or hurricane insurance or is it just a great loss?

July 3,2023- I was just researching the island and I asked some questions like are there any alligators in Sanibel Bay and they said yes then I asked if any alligators ever wander into some of the beautiful neighborhoods there and they also said yes is that why everybody has their pool screen in, it’s such a beautiful place and I was checking the prices of houses for 2024 but they are the same as here in California and in California at least we don’t have so far any devastating hurricanes plus I could not live where sharks and alligators are so prevalent since I love the oceanwith all the flooding off Fort Myers I can imagine what people pay for flood insurance if they can get it because here in California with earthquakes that are prevalent nobody can get earthquake insurance. Tour you gave her was really nice.

Thank you so much for the updated tour! I have been coming to Sanibel for 40 years, and was there and evacuated a few days before Ian. It's nice to see things coming back. One note about the Sanibel Siesta where I have always stayed. I was going to go for a week in June 2024, but found out elevators are not yet working. If you plan to stay there, please be sure to ask about the elevators. Otherwise, looking good!

I am looking to go next year, May of 2025. I am a 55 yo male going on a solo vacation. Where would you recommend? Looking to relax and do a little fishing and snorkeling from the beach. Thanks

Great video. We're on the east coast of SFL and were at South Seas Resort the weekend before the storm. Our anniversary tradition was dinner at Mad Hatter. So sad to see it all devastated but love to see the islands bounce back.

Great video - thank you!! We'd stayed at the Island Inn years ago, then the spring before Ian we stayed at Beacview Cottages - we loved both, but Beachview was our favorite. I just booked a condo at Sanibel Siesta on the Beach for next spring and can't wait to return!!

i miss bellini's restaurant on captiva. now they put some stupid modern residentials in the midde of what was supposed to be a recreational shopping and dining area. damn investors. what the hurrican leaves, speculants kill the rest of the beauty. there should be an island committee preventing specualant activities of this kind.

My sister and I went back shortly after you shot this video. Our family owned Twin Palm Cottages for a few years when we were kids.

Oh my gosh Sanibel looks so so much better !!! It was so heartbreaking right after the storm to see what was left or what wasn’t left BUT this beautiful island is on its way back !! Thanks for showing us the progress!!! Sanibel is still on my bucket list !!!!
